The Pillars of Osteopathy

On June 22nd 1874, Still officially declared himself an osteopath. His new approach, osteopathy, is based on three main philosophical pillars:

  • First axiom: the general immunity of the organism in relation to the said disease.

The primary goal of osteopathy was to treat patients suffering from infectious diseases. The treatment seeks to stimulate the patient's immune system.

In Europe, this rule has been totally replaced by osteoarticular problems.

  • Second axiom: the spinal lesion is the most important factor causing disease.

The spine and its surrounding structures contain the central nervous system, important arterial, venous and lymphatic systems, cerebrospinal fluid, the largest centres of blood cell production and the anchor points for the visceral, ligament and muscle systems.

  • Third axiom: the law that the artery is superior.

By ensuring the free flow of arterial blood, the body cells receive all the immune, nutritive, mineral, fluid and hormonal elements necessary to maintain or restore health.
